In one corner, we have Boris Becker, the man who fathered a child in 1998 after an affair with a waitress in a restaurant broom cupboard, and who faked his role as a Central African Republic diplomat in order to escape appearing at a bankruptcy court case in 2018.
In the other corner, we have Nick Kyrgios, the talented Australian tennis player with a longstanding habit of behaving like a twat during matches.
More recently, however, Kyrgios has been in the news for his no-nonsense, outspoken stance on the reckless behaviour of many of his fellow professional players amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
It’s the latter that led to a number of increasingly nasty exchanges between Kyrgios and Becker on Twitter, starting here:
Can’t believe I’m siding with Kyrgios, but he has every right to call out other pro tennis players that are behaving recklessly.
Some background via Sky Sports, with ‘Alex’ referring to German tennis pro Alexander Zverev, who was filmed dancing in a crowded club despite the pandemic:
Zverev said last week he would self-isolate after playing in Novak Djokovic’s ill-fated Adria Tour exhibition tournament in Serbia and Croatia, which had to be abandoned after numerous players tested positive for COVID-19.
Kyrgios on Monday called Zverev, the current men’s world number seven, “selfish”…
Boris was straight in there to defend his fellow German, and then sent another tweet calling Kyrgios a rat, which led to another response:
By this stage, the Australian’s patience seemed to run out, and he fired off this tweet:
Mmm, doughnuts.
Next round – fight!
And still, it went on:
Cool hashtags, bro.
Kyrgios would bite one more time:
No, scratch that, this is the final exchange:
#word – he’s cool like that.
Come on, Boris – Novak Djokovic’s recent behaviour was reckless at best, and downright idiotic.
Sjoe, that’s enough tweet screenshots for the day.
If I had to call this one, I would say first two sets to the Australian, with Becker looking shaky going into the third.
