The name Larry Nassar might not mean much to you, but to hundreds of women and girls, it is a reminder of a sexual abuse cover-up that brought shame and disgrace to American gymnastics.
His crimes may well have gone unpunished had Marisa Kwiatkowski, Mark Alesia, Tim Evans, Steve Berta, and Robert Scheer of the Indianapolis Star not first reported on his abuse back in 2016.
From there, the story snowballed, with more victims coming forward and the sheer scale of what had occurred was eventually laid bare.
In February of 2018, Nassar was sentenced to 40 to 125 years in federal prison, and narrowly avoided being attacked by a father of one of his victims.
Given that he is now 56, that means the rest of his life behind bars.
Netflix’s Athlete A begins streaming tomorrow (June 24), and comes with this brief synopsis:
This film follows the IndyStar reporters as they reveal the extensive cover-up that allowed abuse to thrive within elite-level gymnastics for more than two decades, the attorney who is fighting the institutions that failed these athletes, and most importantly, the brave whistle-blowers who refuse to be silenced.
Eary reviews have called it “infuriating, anger-inducing, frustrating and, ultimately, inspiring”, and it’s another reminder of the many obstacles women face when raising issues of sexual abuse and gender-based violence.
29 years, hundreds of women and girls, and finally some form of justice was delivered:
