In April of this year, 25-year-old Jean Vosloo organised a weekend away for him and his fiancee, 28-year-old Mari Hoon.

He chose a stone cottage on the banks of the Kouga River in the Eastern Cape, dubbed ‘The Kliphuis’, which he organised with the help of his friend, Stephan du Plessis, who knew the owner.

One day after they arrived, Stephan found the couple dead in the shower together, and the circumstances around their death have proved mysterious in the months that followed.

In a recent segment, Carte Blanche took a stab at trying to solve ‘the Kliphuis mystery’:

Without any obvious cause of death or injuries, even the post-mortems couldn’t give their families closure. With delays at forensic laboratories, answers can take years – but after the incident hit the media, several more people came forward reporting blackouts in the same room.

Carte Blanche investigates whether carbon monoxide poisoning could be the cause of such grief.

Whilst nothing will bring the couple back, perhaps understanding what happened will give the parents some form of closure.
