TikTok is the Twitter of videos, in that much like the limit on characters, you have a 60-second limit on your videos.

It’s also become the home of 60-second home tours, where you get to watch people with more money than is reasonable race through their homes like they’re running from a working-class revolt, past the gold toilet and the private cinema.

Most of the time their tone suggests that they didn’t want the giant fish tank or the Ferrari. It just, sort of, appeared, and there’s nothing they can do about it.

Tune in for a tour of Kim Kardashian’s fridge for a classic example of this.

In response to these videos, writes Curbed, average TikTokers are making their own tours, of average houses, and surprisingly, they’re racking up thousands of views.

As if to mock the faux-blasé tone of people looking to flaunt their spiral staircases and indoor pools, plenty of users are also documenting their “actual middle-class” or lower-middle-class living situations, some more earnestly than others…

Parallel to the app’s glowing walk-throughs of “cottagecore” dream houses and tiny homes are TikToks from users revelling in the ugliness or nonsensicality of their living space.

My personal favourite is titled “Random Things In My White Trash House”:

You’ll have to do a fair amount of scrolling through TikTok to find more. On the way, check in on some of the people who will tell you that they’re middle class while roaming the halls of colosseums.
