Across the country, many schools are dealing with the fact that students of colour, both past and present, have had enough.
It started with Herschel Girls’, and the Instagram account @yousilenceweamplify, and now the spotlight has unearthed some astounding examples of subtle, and at times overt, incidents of racism.
Then there’s Parktown Boys’ High School, with 100 years of prestigious heritage behind it, and a reputation as one of the most sought-after all-boys public schools in the Gauteng province.
Those that follow the news closely may recognise that name for different reasons, and the school has made the news for two separate incidents.
The first of those was the case of Collan Rex, the disgraced former water polo coach, who pled guilty to 144 cases of sexual assault.
In a follow-up report, issued by Peter Harris of Harris Nupen Molebatsi Attorneys, and commissioned by the Gauteng Department of Education, the extent of the abuse at the school was laid bare.
The report concluded that school practices included “a culture of assault and sexual assault under the guise of “initiation practices” and “profoundly shocking” utterances made by teachers in the presence of pupils”.
Then, in January of this year, 13-year-old Enock Mpianzi drowned whilst on a Parktown Boys’ High School Grade Eight orientation camp.
Peter Harris of Harris Nupen Molebatsi Attorneys again undertook a forensic investigation into what had occurred, which detailed the school’s numerous failings in the lead-up to Mpianzi’s death.
Carte Blanche has been watching, and digging, and what they found is not pretty:
…under this pristine veneer, there is a dark side to the story, a history of physical and sexual assault that has destroyed the lives of some of the young students.
In this special report, the victims who spent years suffering in silence speak out, revealing the devastating details of how some teachers and fellow students, quietly carried out the abuse.
This segment pulls no punches, and I’m sure other all-boys high schools around the country will be watching on nervously.
Seriously, stick around, because the longer the video below carries on, the more intense it becomes:
