The image above is a detail of a photograph by Pablo Albarenga, that forms part of a series of work titled Seeds of Resistance.
The photo series captures landscapes and regions in danger from mining and agribusinesses alongside portraits of the activists fighting to conserve them.
Albarenga is the winner of this year’s Sony World Photography Awards, taking home the title of ‘Photographer of the Year’, and $25 000.
According to The World Photography Organisation, this is one of the world’s largest and most prestigious photography competitions.
Albarenga was up against more than 345 000 images from 203 countries and territories submitted across four competitions.
