Judd Apatow is a comedy powerhouse.
His producer credits include Knocked Up, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Bridesmaids, Anchorman (sadly, Anchorman 2), Talladega Nights, Pineapple Express, Step Brothers, Superbad, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and many others.
Basically, there’s a very good chance you’ve got gerook and watched one of his movies over the past 15 years or so.
He’s also the producer of The King of Staten Island, which is loosely based on the life of Pete Davidson, a Saturday Night Live cast member.
Davidson is the reason the term ‘big dick energy’ entered popular lexicon a few years back, although his relationship with pop megastar Ariana Grande didn’t last all that long.
SI Live describes the film as follows:
“The King of Staten Island” follows Scott, a 20-something aspiring tattoo artist who is coming to terms with the loss of his firefighter father, who died 17 years earlier. In real life, Davidson’s dad — whose name was Scott — was an FDNY firefighter who fell victim to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The “Saturday Night Life” star was 7 years old at the time…
Apatow…described it as an “opportunity for Pete to tell you about himself and to tell you about his feelings and his journey.”
Davidson said he was keen to cast people in the film who understood him, and are important to him in real life:
Davidson’s actual grandfather, Stephen Davidson, was cast to be his grandfather in the film; John Sorrentino, who worked with Davidson’s father in the FDNY was cast as Captain Palazzo; Davidson’s former roommate, Derek Gaines, was cast as Zoots; Davidson’s friend, Machine Gun Kelly, was cast as a tattoo shop owner, and Davidson’s best friend Ricky Velez was cast as Oscar.
It’s pretty cool when Judd Apatow says he wants to produce a movie based around your life, and it’s very cool when he lets you cast your buddies.
Anyway, here’s that trailer we promised you:
Due to the pandemic, the movie will straight to on-demand services, and will be available on Amazon Prime Video, and other sites, from June 12.
