There is no shortage of war movies being made, but some stand out from the crowd.
Most recently, the likes of 1917, Dunkirk, and to a lesser extent Hacksaw Ridge, have shown the harsh realities of war with great skill.
Then there’s the Vietnam War, which has been covered in many movies and doccies over the years (Ken Burns’ effort is probably the best doccie of the lot), but never in a manner quite like Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods.
The movie is due for release on Netflix on June 12, and Collider describes it as follows:
The ensemble pic is a Vietnam War movie that follows four African-American war veterans who return to Vietnam years later to find the remains of their fallen squad leaders—and the promise of buried treasure.
The ensemble cast is filled out by Delroy Lindo, Clarke Peters, Norm Lewis, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Paul Walter Hauser, Jonathan Majors, and Jean Reno, with Chadwick Boseman playing their fallen friend…
Inherently political given the time period, the trailer laces in images of unrest in America and abroad during the Vietnam War, while the story of the film appears to be set closer to present day.
This is Lee’s first director film credit since BlacKkKlansman, which was a smash hit, so many are expecting big things.
As is a must for any film that deals with the Vietnam War, we should have a cracking soundtrack.
