Nowadays, keeping up with the Kardashians is frustratingly unavoidable.
Even if you have little to no interest in Kim and her idiot husband, Kanye, you’ve probably had to scroll past a headline about the couple on your way to more relevant news.
So here we are, and our apologies for contributing to the problem. Kim is in the news again for doing what everyone with a sewing machine is doing right now: making face masks.
As is protocol with the Kardashian sisters, however, she’s managed to make a few faux pas along the way.
The Independent breaks it down:
Kim Kardashian West has come under fire for marketing a black face mask as “nude” for dark-skinned women.
Over the weekend, the reality star turned designer launched a new line of non-medical face masks through her shapewear brand SKIMS, which she stated on Twitter came in “five shades of nude”.
So let’s take a look at the tweet that started it all:
A closer look at the photos:
That’s three shades of “nudes” Kim, not five.
Also, two of those aren’t ‘nude’ tones.
While the range of masks proved popular among Kardashian West’s fans, selling out within just one hour, critics were quick to point out that the dark-skinned model featured in the advertisement was wearing a black mask, rather than one that actually matched her skin tone.
“Kimberly, is black supposed to be her nude?” one person wrote on Twitter, while another added, “You do realise black people aren’t the colour black like white people aren’t paper white?”
You know you’re in trouble when somebody calls you by your full name, Kimberley.
The company eventually released the full range of masks:
Kim has not responded to the criticism, but you can take a tour of her fridge while you wait.
If you’re going to buy a face mask (and you should), please leave the big fashion lines alone and support small, local businesses.
They need your help more than the Kardashians.
