Rubber Rings Could Be The Answer For Cape Town Bars After Lockdown [Video]

Stick a six-foot-wide tube around your customers, and you've ticked off some of the physical distancing concerns.

Anyone who has ever set foot in a bar or busy restaurant knows that physical distancing in those places would be tough to police.

Masks also aren’t really an option, unless you want to navigate a fork or straw through the bottom of one.

If you thought first dates at a restaurant were awkward before 2020, try maintaining your allure with a chin dotted in spaghetti sauce.

All of this considered, and to keep up with the times, some restaurants and bars are getting creative to ensure that customers stay safe.

INSIDER visited an eatery in Maryland, USA, called Fish Tales, where customers will be issued with their own “bumper table” upon entry.

The table, designed for social distancing, is on wheels and features a giant inner tube. Working like bumper cars, the customers will remain six feet apart whenever two tubes hit.

“The whole idea is just to make people smile and give hope and do something fun,” Donna Harman, the restaurant’s owner, told Insider.

The restaurant isn’t open yet, but they have conducted a few trial runs to see if the solution will work:

Please, relax – we know there are many, many reasons why this wouldn’t work.

A peek inside the doors:

You know that guy – the one at every party who gets drunk early and tries to ramp up the fun, only to ruin the vibe?

I’m keen to see what that guy does with his tube.

All that aside, though, it’s a fun solution.

South Africa, are you taking notes?
