SAPS and other law enforcement officials haven’t been covering themselves in glory over the past two months.
Many of the people supposedly tasked with enforcing the lockdown and protecting citizens have instead decided to use their position to flout the rules or terrorise innocent people.
A recent incident that captured video of officers trying to “arrest” a toddler gained so much national attention, that even the president has been alerted to it.
If all of that wasn’t enough to (further) shake our confidence in Bheki Cele and his ability to oversee a fair and controlled policing of the national lockdown, a recent incident at the Conville police station should do the trick.
TimesLIVE spoke to Southern Cape police spokesperson Captain Malcolm Pojie.
An investigation has been launched into a fight between police officers at a station in George, Western Cape.
…Pojie said preliminary investigations suggested two off-duty officers from the Pacaltsdorp station visited friends in La Vallia and became “disorderly”.
Conville police officers were dispatched after a complaint was laid, he said.
He said the officers were arrested for contravention of the Disaster Management Act and taken to the Conville station where they were processed at the police holding cells.
It was there that an altercation broke out. A video of the incident has been widely shared on social media:
