The new age of technological communication heralded in by the coronavirus pandemic has not been kind to boomers.
People who had previously settled for a life of Facebook and email as their primary engagement with a computer are now having to master new telecommunication platforms.
To be fair, even the younger generations seem to be having trouble consolidating the fact that when the camera and mic are on people can see and hear you.
While this is can be amusing during an office conference call, it’s also adding a little unintentional humour to more serious situations, the latest of which happened during a debate on COVID-19 in the House of Commons.
Here’s The Daily Mail:
Conservative MP for South Derbyshire Heather Wheeler was speaking during a debate on Covid-19 when an apparent fault with her feed emerged.
Expressing her frustration with the issue, Ms Wheeler appeared to utter, ‘Oh f****** hell’
Deputy Speaker of the House, Nigel Evans, told Ms Wheeler to ‘please carry on’, as her comments were picked up during the feed being broadcast to the Commons Chamber.
Is it just me, or are expletives even funnier when delivered in a British accent? Look out for it at the 12-second mark:
Clearly “conservative” doesn’t extend to language in politics.
MPs have had to get used to a hybrid-Commons system of late, whereby a number of them make their contributions via screens set up in the Chamber.
Although MPs are classed as key workers and are able to travel, such movement and the resulting close proximity of politicians in the Palace of Westminster would risk jarring the public mood while millions of people are stuck at home.
Heather Wheeler is the same MP who described the homeless as “the traditional type, old tinkers and knife-cutters” in an email.
She’ll find no sympathy here.
