Who would have thought that Jordan Peele, one half of Key & Peele, would become one of the horror genre’s hottest properties?
Whatever he touches seems to score big at the box office these days, and his latest feature-length film, Candyman, received good reviews.
I’m not saying it five times into the mirror – that’s on you, and you alone.
Peele is listed as an executive director on Lovecraft Country, the new HBO series set to air at some stage in August, and his touch is immediately apparent from watching the first teaser trailer.
Before we get to that, let’s hear from Polygon:
The series…follows Atticus Turner (Jonathan Majors), a black World War II veteran and devoted sci-fi nerd, whose father is kidnapped by a mysterious cult called the Order of the Ancient Dawn. The cult’s headquarters, and where they’re keeping Turner’s father, is in deep in the woods of rural New England, in place known as Lovecraft Country…
The trailer cuts together moments of several of the book’s vignettes and teases some of the supernatural horror that makes Ruff’s novel thrilling.
But there’s more than otherworldly evil in Lovecraft Country. Though the book deals in the same strangeness and extra-dimensional monsters that Lovecraft’s original work did, it also turns the difficult and unsettling legacy of the author on its head.
That author, H.P. Lovecraft, was a notorious racist and anti-Semite, with both of those themes layered through the plot lines.
Classic Jordan Peele, as evident from the likes of Get Out and Us.
If nothing else, this series is going to have a cracking soundtrack:
J.J. Abrams will also serve as an executive producer.
Should be a goodie, whenever in August it’s finally released.
