Good news, everybody.
Starting from tomorrow (May 1), you can now exercise between 6AM and 9AM, within a five-kilometre radius of your house.
Just as long as you’re not in an “organised group”, which means you can’t meet up with your friends on Sea Point promenade and catch up, Karen.
(The above was said in a particularly snarky tone, because it appears that some key decision-makers in our government are beginning to lose the plot.)
We have already dissected why the national curfew is overkill, and why the reversal of the sale of tobacco products a farce, so let’s move along.
If you’re keen to figure out exactly what that five-kilometre radius will look like, this website is a very handy tool.
The less than aptly named 2kmfromhome.com has been adjusted for the South African rule, and allows you to drop a pin on your home address, before showing you the precise measurement of five kilometres from your front door.
As an example, let’s say you lived on Kloof Street, in the Cape Town CBD, near to the Bombay Bicycle Club. Hipster.
Drop the pin, and this is what greets you:
Zoom in a little closer, and you’ll see that a five-kilometre radius just about gets you to Camps Bay beach.
I’m not saying head there and exercise, to be clear, but we should all know where that five-kilometre cut-off point is.
Heading in the other direction, you could technically jog all the way to Woodstock:
Yes, apparently we are all joggers now, and I expect to see social media filled with screenshots of your ‘minutes per kilometre’ breakdown.
Well done to you, and thanks for sharing. Here’s a ‘like’ to help you feel validated.
I think that’s enough from us.
Head to the site, pop your address in or drop the pin, and see what your radius looks like.
Most importantly, use common sense when exercising (even if some members of our government don’t seem able to), and keep up the safe physical distancing protocols.
It’s already been made clear that a drastic escalation in confirmed cases could see us return to alert level 5, and we really don’t want that.
Thanks, Stu
