After years of playing ‘Johnny Depp in a top hat’ in Tim Burton movies, punctuated here and there by a serious role, or something that resembles a drunken pirate, Depp has made his first video for social media.
The actor has famously avoided all social media platforms in the past, but clearly the risk of fading into obscurity while most of the world is locked down is a great motivator to go online.
You can now follow him on Instagram, but you really don’t have to.
Here’s METRO with more on his video:
He began: ‘This is my first experience within the world of social media. I’ve never done any of this before and I don’t think I’ve ever felt any particular reason to until now.
“Now is the time to open up a dialogue as the threat of this invisible enemy has already caused immeasurable tragedies and enormous damage to people’s lives.”
The ‘invisible enemy’ here is the coronavirus.
The words “pure poetry”, “existential crisis” and “you’re not allowed to be bored” pop up, so settle in for eight minutes of monotone advice about the pandemic.
This is followed by, at the 7:30 mark, a ‘thank you’ for continued support. The tabloids think this is a reference to his split from ex-wife Amber Heard (she levelled some pretty damning accusations against Depp during their divorce).
You can watch the video on Instagram here if you’re a purist, but we’ll embed this YouTube video to make things easier.
He sounds stoned, and we don’t know why it appears as though he’s in a cave.
