Al Capone is one of history’s most notorious gangsters, and Tom Hardy does seem like a great pick to play him.
The crime boss, who was known as ‘Scarface’ long before Al Pacino’s Tony Montana made that name his own, died in 1947 at the age of 48, but his name remains synonymous with organised crime.
Hardy had to undergo quite a transformation for the role, due in large part to the fact that the movie focuses on an ageing and sickly Al Capone.
More from IndieWire:
The biographical drama takes place 10 years into Capone’s prison sentence. The 47-year-old gangster begins suffering from dementia and becomes haunted by his violent past. Joining Hardy on screen is Linda Cardellini, Matt Dillon, Kyle MacLachlan, and “Dunkirk” favorite Jack Lowden.
“Capone” is notable for being [filmmaker Josh] Trank’s first directorial effort since the notorious “Fantastic Four” box office bomb…
Trank’s experience with “Fantastic Four” sent him to director’s jail, and now “Capone” aims to be a comeback.
No such worries for Tom Hardy, whose last major release, 2018’s Venom, became a worldwide blockbuster with over $800 million at the box office.
Off we go:
The movie will first be released for streaming in the US from May 12, with hopes that a theatrical release could take place later in the year when cinemas reopen.
