Let’s take a break from coronavirus stories for a second, hey?
Over the years, Sasol has had some cracking adverts, including South Africa’s best-liked ad ‘of all time’, and their ‘glug glug’ campaign remains a particularly memorable one from days gone by.
It didn’t make the A to Z of South African memes, but it wouldn’t have been out of place.
You may recognise that face up top as the so-called ‘glug glug’ baby, but you’ve probably never spent much time wondering what that baby looks like now.
The team at Channel24 did, though, and their job was made easier by the fact that Sarie launched a campaign to find the baby back in 2017, achieving success the following year.
Before we go any further, let’s jog your memory with the iconic advert:
That was a trip down memory lane.
So what became of that baby? You can read Sarie’s article in Afrikaans here, but let’s stick to English and Channel24:
The first big surprise was the “little boy,” was actually a girl – named Tayla Farrell.
Speaking to the magazine, she explained that she was “discovered” by accident, at a mall with her mother. That day her mother had dressed her in her brother’s blue clothes, so she even looked like a boy.
But how did they get her lips to move so perfectly? Tayla said that her mom rubbed honey on her lips and gums, so she would lick it and open her mouth.
Now, more than two decades later, Tayla is an events planner in Johannesburg, and enjoys sport and dancing.
Via Tayla’s Facebook account, and shared by Channel24, here’s what she looks like now:
Given that we all understand how time works, let’s not be surprised that the baby has grown up into an adult.
Props to Tayla for her part in a little piece of South African advertising history, though.
Next, can we find where the ‘it’s not inside it’s on top’ Cremora legend is these days?
