Many have been critical of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s decision-making in the past but it seems as if our leader is taking South Africa’s response to the coronavirus pandemic very seriously.
Ramaphosa announced strict travel bans for SA on Sunday night and has been ramping up precautions against COVID-19 as the virus spreads.
The President also inspired a new handshake but that’s beside the point. Still, you should learn it.
The latest measure to curb the pandemic comes in the form of limitations on social gatherings.
Over to TimesLIVE for some details on the new regulations:
A tough stance has also been taken on the sale of liquor, which may now not be sold between 6pm and 9am. Places such as clubs, taverns and restaurants where people gather to consume liquor are now closed with immediate effect, unless they are entertaining groups of no more than 50 people.
No applications for special or events liquor licenses will be considered during the period of the national disaster.
Ramaphosa and his team are also ramping up security by enforcing testing and quarantine.
No person who has been clinically, or by a laboratory, confirmed as having Covid-19, or who is suspected of having contracted Covid-19, or who has been in contact with a person who is a carrier of Covid–19, may refuse consent to an enforcement officer.
Provided that if a person does not comply with the instruction or order of the enforcement officer, that person must be placed in isolation or quarantine for a period of 48 hours, as the case may be, pending a warrant being issued by a magistrate, on application by an enforcement officer, the paperwork reads.
South Africa counted 116 confirmed cases of coronavirus as of yesterday morning and it looks like the government isn’t taking any chances.
It might be time to stock up that liquor cabinet.
