Following President Ramaphosa’s speech last night, about the emergency measures that South Africa is putting in place to deal with the coronavirus, all sectors of society are doing their bit to help.
When it comes to preventing the spread of coronavirus, the devil is in the details – so to speak.
TimesLIVE spoke to the head of eThekwini Metro Police, Steve Middleton, who has announced a temporary ban on breathalyser tests in Durban as a preventative measure against spreading COVID-19.
The eThekwini Metro Police are not cutting any corners when it comes to ramping up hygiene measures.
Middleton sent out a voice note announcing their decision, on Friday.
“I felt in the interests of both members of our service and the community at large to place an immediate moratorium on the use of alcohol breathalysers at all roadblocks.”
Before you add a dash of brandy to your on-the-go coffee mug, however, keep in mind that the metro police have asserted that the choice to stop using breathalyser testing will not affect law enforcement’s commitment to keeping South Africa’s roads safe.
It’s been recommended that South Africans try to refrain from travelling domestically anyway, so we suggest drinking from the comfort of your couch if you feel like knocking back a brewski.
If we work together, we will get through this.
