A full investigation has been launched at the Mdantsane Correctional Services Centre in the Eastern Cape after a video went viral online, showing a group of inmates having an excellent time with box wine and music.
The video was recorded on a smartphone and shows other smartphones in the room.
Prisoners aren’t supposed to have access to this kind of technology – or wine – so this isn’t a good look for the institution.
News24 notes that in the video, music plays, wine is sipped and dancing happens.
Take in the revelry:
Correctional services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo says that they have identified the inmates in the video and that they will be losing some of their privileges.
He also took their phones away.
The investigation will establish how the offenders got access to phones and private clothing that are considered contraband inside the facilities, Nxumalo said.
“The Department of Correctional Services will leave no stone unturned in this matter as this is a serious breach of security. This type of behaviour displayed by inmates can never be accepted hence the department will take corrective measures against the implicated inmates,” Nxumalo said.
The inmates have since been moved to a maximum-security centre where the party will be a little harder to organise.
