You may have noticed that’s not Hillary Clinton standing next to Bill in the image above.
Shrewd observation.
That is, of course, Monica Lewinsky, who has become a vocal advocate for the #MeToo movement over the past few years.
Seen through the lens of how we now understand power dynamics and sexual relations, the then 22-year-old intern’s part in one of the most infamous scandals of the 1990s has been reexamined.
With Hillary Clinton’s run at the presidency, Bill has been forced to address the issue now and again, because I guess when you run against a person who slept with a pornstar, while his wife Melania was pregnant, and then bought her silence, you have to be held to a certain moral standard.
Bill’s been chatty in a new four-part documentary by Hulu, simply titled Hillary, reports CNN:
Both Hillary and Bill Clinton — who are interviewed for this portion separately — describe their memories from that time, including when the President informed the first lady about the affair and how she told him that he needed to inform their daughter himself…
“So, I did that, which was awful,” a visibly emotional Bill Clinton says, “What I did was wrong. I just hated to hurt her.”
The former President is then asked why he thinks he took that risk at the time.
“Nobody thinks about that, nobody thinks I am taking a risk. That is not why people do stupid things,” Clinton says. “Nobody sits down and thinks I will take a really irresponsible risk, it is bad for my family, bad for my country, bad for the people who work with me. That is not what happens.”
…Clinton then describes how his decision to enter into the sexual relationship was, in part, motivated by life’s “pressure and disappointments and terrors, fears of whatever” and describes it as one thing that he “did to manage my anxieties for years.”
Sheesh, man – take some CBD oil, treat yourself to a massage, or engage in a little morning meditation. Sleeping with your intern is certainly one of the more ‘out there’ coping mechanisms.
Let’s watch the trailer for Hillary before getting back to business:
The comments section under that trailer is not kind to the former first lady.
After infamously stating that he doesn’t owe Lewinsky an apology in 2018 (although he did apologise back in 1998), it appears he has changed his tune:
“Over the years I have watched her trying to get a normal life back again,” he says. “But you got to decide how to define normal,” he says, seemingly acknowledging that it will be difficult for the former White House intern to ever get her life back…
The episode ends with an emotional Bill Clinton reflecting on the price — both personally and politically — that his wife has paid for staying with him.
“I was so grateful that she thought we still had enough to stick it out,” Bill Clinton says. “God knows the burden she paid for that.”
True that.
Shag pornstars, pay them off, grab women by their nether regions, and talk about avoiding STDs as your own personal Vietnam, and you could serve two terms in the White House, with the blessing and backing of religious America.
Heaven forbid your husband has an affair, though, because you’ll be forced to revisit that one time and time again.
