Yesterday, as I walked out of my apartment onto a busy street in the Cape Town CBD just before 6PM, a criminal smashed a car’s back window in full view of a car guard.
The car guard did nothing, the criminal ran away, and the car’s owner returned to find broken glass surrounding his vehicle.
And then we all walked away, because it’s what we’ve come to expect as part of our everyday lives.
That’s not the case for a tourist who was reportedly attacked outside a Cape Town hotel, with anti-crime activist Yusuf Abramjee sharing CCTV footage from the incident yesterday.
Abramjee says that the couple in the video below left the country immediately after the incident, and you can only imagine what they’ve told people after touching down back home.
The date on the CCTV footage shows the incident occurred on February 27:
It’s not known what happened once the tourist and his attackers disappear out of view, but the crooks can be seen fleeing shortly afterwards.
SAPS says that at present, there is no information on charges related to the incident, so these dangerous criminals continue unchecked.
As a tourist, would you hang around to file a charge, or you would get the hell out of the country, and encourage everyone you speak with to cross Cape Town off as a potential travel destination?
