So far the EFF has managed to squeeze at least three brawls into 2020.
They threw down in Tshwane in January, tried to get things going at SONA and more recently, things went south at the Eastern Cape legislature.
They’ve probably caused a ruckus at other gatherings, but if we just reported on the EFF and its propensity for violence, we’d report on nothing else.
The scuffle that broke out on Tuesday in the Eastern Cape started when speaker Helen Sauls-August instructed sergeant-at-arms, Thembekile Mzantsi to summon security to remove EFF MPLs, because they were “not dressed properly”, reports TimesLIVE.
The sitting was assembled to discuss premier Oscar Mabuyane’s state of the province address.
Instead, this happened:
One of my favourite lines from SONA 2017, was “members are using their hats to harm other members”. There’s a reason that members of the EFF aren’t usually permitted to wear hardhats into public gatherings – they quickly become weapons.
EFF MPLs and supporters used their hardhats to beat up security personnel who had been instructed to eject MPLs for wearing their trademark red overalls.
…After EFF MPLs and party members eventually left the chambers, legislature staff were seen cleaning the blood off the floor. Because of the violence, the debate was delayed by more than an hour.
The violence continued outside the building as well:
They are removing our MPLs from the Eastern Cape Legislature the EFF constituency in the Eastern Cape would never allow. The bouncers who assaulted a woman was dealt with..

We’re in a recession for the second time in two years and the country really needs to get it together moving forward.
But by all means, let’s keep beating the hell out of each other whenever formal political gatherings happen.
