Before a nasty late hit by Hurricanes hooker Ricky Riccitelli (shite name, shite bloke), which has put Siya Kolisi out of action for six to eight weeks, he was gearing up for an exciting season leading the Stormers.
The team has fared pretty well without him (this past weekend aside), but let’s forget about Siya’s on-field exploits (or lack thereof) and focus on that time he went surfing with Jordy Smith.
Our local surfing hero is currently ranked third on the 2020 Men’s Championship Tour, so he’s not a bad coach to call on.
The meeting took place back before Siya’s knee injury, and here’s the Red Bull description of their surf session:
Jordy Smith showed Rugby World Cup-winning Springbok captain, Siya Kolisi just what it is going take to win a medal at the Tokyo Summer Olympics, when he took him surfing.
Kolisi was riding a custom surfboard shaped by Smith’s father Graham and despite the unruly, choppy conditions caused by an on-shore wind (blowing from land to the sea) and big swell, he took to the new challenge with gusto.
Props to Siya for getting out there, and props to Jordy for a pretty decent joke around the 40-second mark:
Rest that knee, Siya, and good luck to Jordy for this year’s World Surf League.
Oh, and if you missed the Blitzboks incredible comeback against Fiji in the Los Angeles Sevens early this morning local time (12 points down and 30 seconds to play), do yourself a favour and watch the highlights.
