Back in 2015, a Japanese brewing company claimed that it had found the secret to eternal youth.
It created a beer called ‘Precious’, that contained two grams of collagen – the protein that gives skin its plumpness and smoothness – in each serving.
The company claimed that drinking Precious would fight the signs of ageing.
If you’re wondering why you haven’t heard about this miracle beer, it probably has something to do with the fact that science took one look at it, pointed out that collagen is a protein that would be digested, not absorbed, and the ruse was up.
But, while beer may not make you look younger, it does come with some surprising health benefits, from fighting inflammation to aiding indigestion.
According to a study reported on by The Irish Post, it can even increase your lifespan.
Researchers from Maastricht University in Holland studied the drinking habits of some 5,500 test subjects over a 20-year period.
Professor Dr Piet van den Brandt, who led the research, said: “Our analyses show significantly positive associations between alcohol and longevity in men and women.”
The study showed that individuals consuming around half a pint of beer a day on average were 81 per cent more likely than teetotallers to live to 90 or beyond.
How about that for a great reason to crack a cold one at the end of the day?
Researchers did stress that while the results do point to the benefits of moderate alcohol consumption, they shouldn’t be used as an excuse for a midweek bender.
Moderate drinking is good for heart health, although it should be noted that consuming too much booze, and binge drinking, can prove toxic to the body.
Everything in moderation, and seeing as you’re drinking in moderation, you need to go in for quality over quantity.
Finding the right beer is everything.
You could become a beer snob, learn the lingo, and start hunting down the rarest and most expensive beers out there.
However, your friends might not like you much after you become that person. Studies prove that friends and family increase your lifespan, so alienating everyone could theoretically counter the effects of beer drinking.
You could also just stock up on a quality beer that has stood the test of time, and is a firm favourite among those who love the sun, good vibes and good times.
I’m obviously talking about Sol Beer which also adds some vitality to your longevity, so it’s the perfect beer to take along on your quest for immortality.
Make sure you drink it ice cold, with a lime wedge to really up the flavour (and add a little vitamin C – you might as well commit) if that’s your style.
Here’s to your health!
