Sometimes, it’s the sheer brazenness of South Africa’s crime that is the most jarring.
That’s certainly the case in the attempted murder of attorney Jakes van der Merwe, who was shot in the neck on February 12 in Gardens, Cape Town.
The 53-year-old was sat in his vehicle on Constantia Road when a hitman, wearing a Springbok supporter’s hat and face mask, shot him in broad daylight.
Thankfully, CCTV footage in the area captured the hitman and his vehicle, a silver/charcoal Hyundai H1 minibus.

SAPS also released three images of the hitman and his vehicle. One of those can be seen at the top of the page, and here are the other two:
The man is wanted for attempted murder, and police believe that the suspect was acting alone.
Police have asked anyone with information to please contact Warrant Officer Shaun Bardien of Cape Town central police on 082 469 3176 or 073 220 0653.
