When it comes to routers, I tend to subscribe to the simple mantra of ‘have you tried turning it off and on again’?
Yes, it’s rudimentary, but it’s also surprisingly effective, and means I don’t need to try and figure out what all of those blinking, different-coloured lights actually mean.
Unfortunately, what my ‘off and on again’ technique does not take into account is the security of the router, which is pretty important when you consider that it’s the gateway to the internet for all your devices.
As RSAWEB points out, “you may be putting everything you’re doing online at risk by missing out on important security features due to outdated firmware”.
If that doesn’t do the trick, there’s also the fact that it could be affecting your network speed. There, that got your attention, didn’t it?
For existing RSAWEB customers, you’ve most likely got an Archer C2 or C20 router and can find instructions on how to update your router here.
This should be done at least four times a year, to ensure you have the latest updates installed.
For those with a different brand of router, fear not. These below are some of the more common manufacturers, with links to their update pages:
Don’t see your router brand there? Google it. I’m sure you can manage just fine without the handholding.
RSAWEB customers can also contact their support team, who are always available to help, on support@rsaweb.net, or by ringing 087 470 0000.
If you’re not yet on board with RSAWEB, and you want to sign up for home fibre, there’s the added bonus of scoring a free Mini-UPS.
A UPS is a device that will keep your network connection and router running during load shedding or a power outage. That means you’ll stay connected for up to four hours, even when there’s no electricity.
Come to think of it, has anyone tried turning Eskom off and back on again?
