Johnny Depp and Amber Heard have been trading insults and accusations for a while now.
Last year, Heard spoke about a version of Depp she called ‘the Monster’, and Depp hit back with accusations that Heard put a cigarette out on his face and threw bottles of vodka at him.
The latest details of Depp’s life to emerge come after a terrible error on the part of his former legal team, as the actor leads two simultaneous libel lawsuits.
One lawsuit is against the UK-based parent company of the Sun, News Group Newspapers, and the other is against Heard herself, stemming from her article in the Washington Post.
That last one is quite a read.
Over to Vanity Fair for more on that terrible error:
Depp’s former legal team accidentally shared 70,000 text messages with the defendants in London (but not with those in the U.S.) At the preliminary hearing at the High Court, where the actor was present on Wednesday, the court heard a selection of those text messages, which Depp reportedly sent to his friend, actor Paul Bettany [with Depp, below].
He allegedly wrote in November 2013, “Let’s burn Amber.” Then later on the same day, “Let’s drown her before we burn her!!! I will f–k her burnt corpse afterwards to make sure she is dead.”
Wow, Johnny. Not a good look at all.
There’s more:
Another string of texts, in which Depp allegedly references “Ugly, mate… No food for days… Powders… half a bottle of whiskey, a thousand red bull and vodkas, pills, 2 bottles of Champers on plane,” was used by the Sun’s attorney Adam Wolanski as corroborating evidence for an event in which Heard alleges that Depp kicked her and threw a boot at her before passing out on a toilet.
From the texts, a picture of a man who was clearly in the depths of addiction emerges.
Via the Independent, here are more of the alleged messages he sent:
…in a further text to Mr Bettany in May 2014, he wrote: “I’m gonna properly stop the booze thing darling … Drank all night before I picked Amber up to fly to LA, this past Sunday.
“An angry, aggro Injun in a f*****’ blackout, screaming obscenities and insulting any f*** who got near… I’m done.
“I am admittedly too f***** in the head to spray my rage at the one I love… for little reason, as well I’m too old to be that guy. But, pills are fine!!!”
After the alleged texts were read out, Depp’s U.K. lawyer, David Sherborne, refuted that they in any way implicated his client, saying “Nowhere, I repeat, nowhere, is there a single smoking gun”, and that “there is no document where Mr. Depp says ‘I hit Ms. Heard’ let alone ‘I hit her on numerous occasions.'”
It’s also reported that Depp was sat behind his lawyers throughout the hearing, wearing a suit and blue-tinted glasses.
As one does while indoors.
With both libel cases still ongoing, expect more details to emerge.
