We live in a country where our politicians throw punches at every opportunity so it shouldn’t be surprising that civilians have started solving everything with street brawls.
The ‘South African brawl’ can take on many forms.
There’s the Kyalami brawl – entertaining to watch and borderline comical in its execution.
Then there’s the ‘traffic-induced’ brawl, like the one that took place on Strand Street, when a City of Cape Town worker was forced to use a broomstick to defend himself after a truck collision.
The most recent Jozi street brawl was a family affair (aunties, uncles, the whole gang was there).
Which brings us to Durban, where the brawls start with a bit of banter and end in gun violence.
Over to TimesLIVE, for the developing story:
The police are looking into an incident of public violence after footage of a brawl emerged on social media on Monday.
The video shows two groups of men in an argument where one of the men brandishes a firearm and fires a warning shot. He fires another shot a short while later.
The incident allegedly happened in Chatsworth, south of Durban.
No one was shot (as far as we can tell). Check it out:

That escalated from ‘hey, hey’ to guns, then back to ‘hey’ very quickly.
The police have been notified and are investigating.
Meanwhile, in Hillcrest, another brawl unfolded in a bar.
IOL reports that the police are looking for unknown men who shot three people during a bar fight, in the pub on Old Main Road, at around midnight on Saturday.
“The wounded were taken to hospital. The matter is still under investigation,” provincial police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said.
Mobi-Claw 911 spokesperson Mike Myers said they received an alert from a local pub of a shooting incident on its premises.
“The police, private security officers and paramedics were on the scene within minutes. At first it seemed as if there were no injuries; then information started to filter through that the victims were being taken to a local hospital in private vehicles.”
“This was relayed to the police, who sent officers to investigate,”Myers said.
The police suspect that rival biker gangs were involved in a drug turf war, and offered the following warning to Hillcrest residents:
“As long as there is a demand for drugs in the suburbs, we will attract drug dealers from all over to our neighbourhood. The higher the demand, the bigger the attraction to the dealers and the bigger the chance of dealers stepping on each other’s toes,” Myers said.
You heard him Hillcrest – you need to get high on life. Hugs not drugs, etc.
South Africa, can we all just chill, please?
