It’s been a rough few weeks for Communications Minister Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams.
Firstly, she was accused of taking her husband, Thato Abrahams, to the US and Switzerland at the expense of taxpayers as part of her wedding celebrations.
She was also accused of letting him attend official meetings, and it’s alleged that Thato enjoyed a chauffeur-driven ride in a Mercedes-Benz S600, allocated to the minister, which took him from Geneva to Paris to go shopping.
You can read that report here, but let’s move along to the trainwreck interview she gave earlier in the week.
When questioned by eNCA reporter Xoli Mngambi about the spending of taxpayers’ money, Ndabeni-Abrahams went on the attack
Look at the disdain with which she treats the question, and then watch the moment she inserts her entire foot into her mouth:
Xoli:
You flew your husband to Switzerland at taxpayers’ money for wedding anniversary?Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams (Comms Min):
I’ve never been to Switzerland. My husband has never been to Switzerland.
We went to Geneva & New York. It’s a blatant lie. pic.twitter.com/x3kAOPDdLs

She really thought she was killing it.
Judging by her tone, she’s been reading the Bathabile Dlamini handbook on how to show contempt to any journalist who questions you.
The jokes soon flooded in – Swexit, anyone?
In the wake of being ridiculed across social media, Ndabeni-Abrahams issued a statement:
“Earlier this morning, I had an interview on the South African Morning with Xoli Mngambi on eNCA.
“A question was asked relating to a September 2019 trip to Geneva, Switzerland. When the question was raised, I erroneously referred to Switzerland instead of France, responding to the effect that my husband and I had not been to Switzerland, but Geneva.
“I profusely apologise for this error as I meant to say that we had not been to France in that particular instance, but in Geneva where Mr Abrahams had accompanied me on an official trip in line with the Ministerial Handbook.
“This is informed by previous misleading media reports that had indicated that during this trip, Mr Abrahams travelled to France.”
Dishonesty 101 – keep your lies simple and stick to them, Stella.
After all, that’s 90% of what an ANC Communications Minister’s job entails.
