When you go into the ocean, you’re going into the home of a number of animals that strike fear into many people.
That’s why here in the Cape, we’re grateful for the Shark Spotters – a team of dedicated folks, who look out for us, by keeping an eye out for the great white sharks that have recently returned to our waters.
In Florida, surfer Jeremy Johnston took his board out, and then followed up his surf with a bit of drone flying, only to realise that he hadn’t been alone out there.
Per CNN,
Johnston, 33, told CNN he was already nervous when he went to get in to water at New Smyrna Beach on Tuesday because he noticed a bunch of fishermen in the area.
“But the weather and waves were really great so I decided to go for it,” he said.
He surfed for a bit, then launched his drone, which revealed this:
That’s at least a dozen blacktip sharks, close to the shore.
“I was shocked and amazed,” Johnston said about seeing how many were actually there. “I’ve only ever seen footage like that on ‘Shark Week’ and I’ve always dreamed of getting a clip like this, especially since we’re the shark bite capital of the world.”
That’s probably because they have no interest in nibbling on you.
When he saw the sharks, Johnston yelled at a couple of people to get out of the water, but he reckons it’s still a safe place to swim.
Johnston doesn’t want people to be scared away from the beach and he hit the waves again on Wednesday. “It should only show you how amazing and diverse our wildlife is here on the east coast of Florida,” he said.
The International Shark Attack File estimates that anyone who has been swimming at Smyrna Beach has likely been within 10 feet of a shark.
In other words, you don’t need a drone to know they’re around.
