The car in the image above is a white Lamborghini Urus. It’s the same make and model as a car that went missing in Johannesburg on February 4.
The owner of the car fell victim to a scam that’s been doing the round lately, whereby luxury car owners are contacted by someone who claims that there’s something wrong with the car and it needs to be returned to the dealership.
The cars are then loaded onto a flatbed truck, and they disappear into the night.
When the car owner calls the dealership to check on things, reports EWN, they discover the awful truth.
Back to the Lamborghini:
According to community publication, the BedfordEdenvale News, the vehicle – which is valued at over R3 million – went missing in Bedfordview.
The owner has put forward a reward of R200 000 for anyone who can help facilitate the return of the car. A picture of the vehicle and the reward notice has been doing the rounds on Twitter:
If you want to help with the hunt, here’s what you need to look out for:
A lot of people suspect that the car has already left the country, which wouldn’t surprise me.
A Lamborghini like this isn’t the kind of car that just fades into the background.
Meanwhile, SAPS told TimesLIVE that they’re pursuing a lead in Mozambique. Private investigator Anton Koen of NoJack Vehicle Tracking says that the Lambo isn’t the first car to go missing thanks to the scam.
“There is definitely a spike, we have two verified cases of high-end vehicles being taken around last week. There is a very sophisticated scam that these people use to lure the owners. They are very strategic and in many cases work with the dealership,” he told TimesLIVE.
The dealership scam appears to be a more sophisticated version of another hijacking scam that recently made headlines.
This one involves contacting someone who is selling a car, then taking it for a test drive, or threatening the seller with a weapon before making off with the vehicle.
Be safe out there, people. Criminals are getting more and more creative with their methods.
And, if you see that Lambo on the roads, call SAPS.
