Before streaming TV came along, and shrewd internet users couldn’t yet find entire series to download with a few clicks of the mouse, you generally had to wait around for a week for each episode to air.
Now we are able to binge to our heart’s content, and the likes of Netflix have shown that we have an almost insatiable appetite for true-crime stories.
I guess it started with Making a Murderer, and now they just keep on coming, which is more than fine for fans like myself.
At present, there are recent releases like Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez and McMillions, and there has also been a great deal of buzz around The Pharmacist.
TIME gives us the gist of the story:
Central to the series is Dan Schneider, a pharmacist living in St. Bernard Parish in Louisiana, a community located southeast of New Orleans, who becomes an unlikely hero.
The beginning of the series focuses on the devastating death of Schneider’s son, Danny Jr., who was fatally shot at the age of 22 while trying to buy crack in New Orleans’ Lower Ninth Ward in April 1999.
Like many true crime documentaries, The Pharmacist follows an unsatisfying investigation conducted by police, who initially find no leads for Danny Jr.’s murder, largely due to a culture of silence around talking to authorities within the community where the crime took place.
We don’t want to give too much away, so let’s get straight to the trailer:
These days, America’s opioid crisis is well-known and widely documented, and an estimated 10,3 million Americans aged 12 and older misused opioids in 2018 alone.
When the story is made so personal, though, as it is with Dan and his son, it really does hit harder.
The Pharmacist is currently available on Netflix.
