According to a recent survey, Capetonians are the least romantic South Africans.
Sorry, not sorry.
Whilst the methodology used in that study is a touch iffy, there’s no denying that, in recent times, Cape Town has become Africa’s dating scam capital, with the city now dubbed “New Lagos” in international law enforcement circles.
The methods used, and the people targetted, point towards a sophisticated network of scammers, so it pays to be aware of what to look out for.
There’s also the added bonus, then, of getting your own back, as Capetonian Jessica Carver did recently.
Carte Blanche decided to investigate “the psychology behind why some singles still fall for dating scams, which leave them destitute”, focusing on the stories of a few South Africans who have been taken for a ride:
