We live in an age driven by technology.
And, while email is on its way out, there are still myriad ways that people can contact you at all times. Just this morning, I was hit with multiple WhatsApp messages, and a couple of Instagram DMs, and that was all before 7AM.
Some say this makes life easier, but you’d be forgiven for wanting to take a break from it all every now and then.
Many hotels and travel destinations are getting wise to this, and a quick search will set you up with a few off-the-grid spots to ditch the smartphone and get back to basics.
If you’re heading to Sweden, there’s one spot, in particular, that stands out.
House Beautiful looked into the Arctic Bath hotel, which has recently opened for business:
In Swedish Lapland, the hotel Arctic Bath is surrounded by woodland, icy waters, and a glowing sun.
The middle of the floating structure is designed to look like a cluster of logs on the river to pay homage to the importance of forests in the country’s development. A giant ice bath lay at its center with saunas and other wellness facilities around it.
If you want to take a group of friends with you, you can rent a five-bed land cabin. For a more intimate holiday, they offer two-person suites.
Then there are double-room floating cabins that get you closer to nature.
The rooms on the water are connected to the shore by floating walkways. They free-float in the summers and sit on the frozen Lule River in the winters.
Nature is incorporated into the cabins through the use of wood, stone, and leather to encourage guests to “immerse themselves in the elements while leaving a minimal environmental footprint behind,” according to the hotel’s website.
Your stay includes breakfast and a five-course dinner that changes each night.
Everything the hotel’s restaurant serves is locally sourced. That means breakfast involves a selection of local breads, meats, and cheeses, while dinner involves signature dishes like lightly-smoked capercaillie and Gahkku (Sámi flat bread).
If simply chilling out and focussing on personal wellbeing isn’t enough to keep you entertained, the hotel offers a range of activities like husky sled rides and village visits.
Sounds like bliss.
