You wouldn’t expect Pablo Escobar’s brother to be the most level-headed bloke around, especially when you consider that he acted as an accountant for his brother’s Medellín drug cartel.
I would have thought that means he has enough cash hidden away in secret stashes to never have to work again, but apparently that’s not the case.
That product appears to have flopped, but Escobar won’t be put off. He’s used a similar methodology when launching the Escobar Fold 2, laying down the challenge to fellow smartphone producers, Samsung.
I think that’s what is going on in this advert that appears to draw heavily from Benny Benassi’s iconic ‘Satisfaction’ music video:
OK, then.
The ‘Pablo always wins’ line is quite odd, given that the drug kingpin was shot dead through the ear by Colombian national police in 1993.
At least the brand is consistent, and the Escobar Fold 2 ‘official unboxing video’ is exactly what you would imagine it to be.
As NewsAU points out, the whole thing is so confusing that it could be some kind of elaborate scam:
Some clues abound in the remarkably poorly written press release distributed to announce the new device, which Escobar Inc. claims has an initial production run of 200,000 units and will sell for just $US399 ($A596.68)…
…we can’t confidently say the Escobar Fold 2 will actually show up if you order one, but the still-alive Escobar brother appears to take his business seriously, even when he gives away its secrets to success.
“My goal is to become the overstock kingpin of electronical (sic) devices this year,” Roberto Escobar is quoted as saying in the press release. “All these factories simply have too much technology laying around, nobody is buying anything in China from secondary factories. We cut the prices and give clients direct discounts under the Escobar brand umbrella.”
I wouldn’t go anywhere near this phone with a barge pole, and that’s before you consider some of the shifty characters that are endorsing it.
Oh, look, it’s Donald Trump’s former campaign manager and senior adviser, Corey Lewandowski:
That’s enough to put me off completely.
You can read more on why it’s potentially a scam here.
