I’m a man of simple pleasures. I surround myself with the same people and brands that I trust, and that have served me well over time. Not all of those brands are 2oceansvibe partners, I might add.
Like Lea & Perrins Hot Pepper Sauce – a favourite in my home, alongside Tabasco.
Lea & Perrins Hot Pepper Sauce (not to be confused with their Worcester sauce) used to be easy to find, but a few months ago it started to get a bit tricky.
Suddenly it was only available in Spar, then only in Giovanni’s, and now… nowhere. I called the Director of Corporate and Government Affairs for Heinz UK (who own Lea & Perrins) – one Nigel Dickie – who told me it’s been discontinued, globally! God, how rude!
I was then messaged by Lady Georgie, who told me to forget about Lea & Perrins, and to rather get Frank’s RedHot hot sauce. I quote:
I am going to tell you a secret, reserved only for my very best people. There is a hot pepper sauce called Frank’s – it is probably the most delicious thing that will ever touch your lips (outside of rosé).
I digress. Its only available from the Olive Branch Deli on Kloof Street. Otherwise from Whole Foods in London. But we have mules to bring back.
OK, so now we’ve moved from Lea & Perrins, to Frank’s.
I tottered off to Olive Branch Deli in the Lifestyle On Kloof Centre (next to Woolies) and MY WORD, how they have grown. I highly recommend a visit. So anyway, I asked if they had any leftover Lea & Perrins. No, they didn’t. So I thought, hey, while I’m here, let’s try out some of that Frank’s hot sauce.
Guess what? Sold out. OMG, is there actually a Cape Town hot sauce crisis going down right now?
But then I heard something interesting. Apparently the Olive Branch Deli has a WAITING LIST for the stuff. This shit must be good! I added my name and they said they would let me know when it arrives. Apparently, all the stock goes to the waiting list the moment it arrives and there ‘might’ not be enough for me.
I couldn’t stand the chance of not getting any of this famous sauce, so I jumped onto Amazon (US) and ordered it, to be delivered to ‘my New York address’ – courtesy of Postbox Courier – so they could grab it from there and deliver it to my hands in Cape Town.
What’s more – I went for bulk vibes – a six-pack, no less!
I’m not sure what hurdles a hot sauce would encounter getting through customs, but at least I know Postbox Courier will handle it all for me.
