I find talking about traffic in Cape Town almost as tedious as the traffic itself, but the show must go on.
We all know that any time spent staring at the backside of the car in front of you is time wasted, but those Capetonians who are forced to commute for work are really racking up the hours.
According to location technology company TomTom, which used data from 416 cities in 57 countries, Bengaluru in India suffers the worst traffic congestion, with drivers spending an average of 71% extra travel time stuck in traffic.
BusinessTech reports that Cairo is the worst African city, with Cape Town ranking 101 out of the 416 cities. Jozi came in at 121, but they’re spending all of the time they save on the roads fighting with swords and brawling in the streets of Greenside.
You need to work on those anger management issues.
TomTom estimates that drivers in Cape Town and Johannesburg will both spend an average of 20-21 extra minutes per 30 minute trip in the morning stuck in traffic.
You can likewise expect to spend an extra 20 minutes per 30 minute trip in the evening.
This is roughly the equivalent of six days and 10 hours lost to traffic every year.
No man, that’s gross.
Makes zooming around on two wheels seem all the more appealing.
Let’s take a closer look at TomTom’s Cape Town stats. If you hover your mouse over the image below, you’ll see an enlarged version of the infographic.
You can also click on it, if that’s more your style:
As if Monday mornings between 7AM and 8AM weren’t bad enough already.
More stats – look at that, you could have read 4 623 pages of Proust’s In Search of Lost Time instead, or knitted seven sweaters.
Again, a larger image will appear if you hover above, or click on, the picture below:
TomTom’s results do differ from those of the INRIX 2018 Global Traffic Scorecard, which found that Jozi was the country’s most congested city, but both point to a situation where we’re spending far too much time behind the wheel.
Ultimately, if you’re not willing to change your lifestyle, that’s only going to continue.
You do you, but if you’re thinking about looking at that two-wheel life, then a Vespa is the way to go.
Seth will even hook you up with a sweet deal – email editor@2oceansvibe.com and let him work his magic.
Just think of all those sweaters you could knit.
