There are many things in this world that I will never master, and zooming around on two wheels is one of them.
That’s fine by me, as I would rather be in the passenger seat of someone else’s car, tinkering with the radio and moaning about the quality of music on South African stations these days.
For Taye Perry and Kirsten Landman (who we profiled last year), two wheels are the preferred mode of transport, and they’re not bothered about roads, either.
The duo recently took on one of the world’s most notorious endurance races, and if you’re looking for some inspiration, consider it done.
Here’s the Carte Blanche write-up:
The Dakar rally is an endurance race like no other – 7 900 KM in twelve gruelling days across the harshest terrain Saudi Arabia has to offer. It’s a race that pushes riders to their limits – the ultimate challenge that very few would dare take on, but this year two South African women took their place amongst some of the most elite racers in the world.
One is known as “The iron lady of hard ‘enduro’”, and the other, “The Desert Rose”. Carte Blanche meets these two extraordinary riders who beat the odds and returned as conquering heroes.
They may never see the same level of acclaim as our heroes from more familiar sporting codes, but that shouldn’t detract from their feat:
Congrats, ladies – let’s hope this inspires others to follow on in your footsteps (tyre marks?).
Also, if you enjoy watching South African crooks being caught red-handed by the Carte Blanche crew, be sure to watch this recent segment on a notorious electrician.
