While we all enjoy a bit of fantasy or fiction, it’s hard to resist the pull of a true story.
If you’ve watched Don’t F**k With Cats you’ll know that true-crime knocks it out of the park when it comes to suspense and unforeseen twists.
Last year was a good year for documentaries, from the greatest festival to never happen documented in Fyre, to an in-depth look inside Bill Gates’ brain.
This year is looking just as promising, according to Marie Claire.
Here are five excellent doccies to look out for in 2020.
Greta
It’s hard to imagine the ongoing fight to halt climate change without Greta Thunberg, but less than two years ago she was an unknown 15-year-old student in Sweden who decided to stage a school strike.
This documentary follows her from the early days through to her speech at the UN.
The Cave
In the midst of the Syrian war, civilians find refuge in a subterranean hospital known as the Cave, where paediatrician and managing physician Dr. Amani Ballour and her colleagues Samaher and Dr. Alaa have claimed their right to work as equals alongside their male counterparts.
Vivos
More than 40 000 people have disappeared in Mexico, many as a result of the country’s ongoing cartel wars. In 2014, 43 college students were attacked. Six people were killed, and 43 people were forcibly ‘disappeared’.
The reason they were targeted is still a mystery. This is their story told through their friends and family.
One Child Nation
Chinese-born filmmakers Nanfu Wang (Hooligan Sparrow) and Jialing Zhang expose the devastating consequences of China’s one-child policy through the stories of those who lived through it.
Assassins
In 2017, Kim Jong-Nam, the half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un, was at an airport in Malaysia when two women put some fabric over his face with a nerve agent on it, killing him.
The women pleaded not guilty to murder, claiming that they thought they were participating in a harmless prank. It’s widely believed that Kim Jong-Un orchestrated the hit. Assassins follows the court case.
Some of these are already available in the US, while others have yet to be officially released.
Look out for them as the year goes on.
