It’s been a tough couple of weeks for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, as they navigate the implications of their decision to #megxit the Royal Family.
Last week, Harry met with the Queen to discuss the terms of their abdication, and it looked like everything went well.
There was a lot of tea, and lunch, and civil conversation.
Now that the smoke has cleared, we have a little more information about what it’s all going to mean.
The Queen released the following statement, which was posted on Meghan and Harry’s Instagram account, SussexRoyal:
Sky News notes that along with the above statement, which shows a bit more emotion than we’re used to from the Queen, the public has also been informed of changes to Meghan and Harry’s titles and duties.
Prince Harry and Meghan will lose royal funds and no longer use their HRH titles from spring, Buckingham Palace has confirmed.
The couple will be known as Harry, Duke of Sussex, and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.
It mirrors the title taken by Diana, Princess of Wales, after her divorce.
Harry was born a prince and will remain a prince, but is no longer a ‘Royal Highness’. CNN has a few more details:
Harry and Meghan are also keeping all of their private causes and patronages — including Invictus — and the various patronages they hold separate to their association with the Queen. But the couple will have to find a way of tying this together with bringing in an income.
They’re going to need that income because they’ll be required to pay back repay the £2,4 million of taxpayers’ money spent on renovating their Berkshire home – Frogmore Cottage.
Harry and Meghan will have to bring in quite a substantial income to keep up with their current lifestyles — while the Prince of Wales will be financing them through his private estate, the Duchy of Cornwall, this is expected to be in the low millions and may not be permanent.
They’ll stay on at Frogmore, but are expected to spend most of their time in North America, and the Sussex Royal brand may need to be reworked to accommodate their new roles.
Oh, and they have to pay rent for Frogmore.
They’re just like us, now.
Except they’re still exceptionally wealthy, connected, and royal.
