Give me my couch and a movie any day of the week over heading to the cinema, but not everybody feels the same way.
That being said, the stats do suggest that fewer South Africans are heading to the movies than in years gone by, although that could be as a result of a struggling economy, in addition to the rise of streaming platforms like Showmax and Netflix.
MyBroadband did some digging using IMDb Pro’s Box Office Mojo, in order to reveal which movies took the most at the box office here in South Africa.
About that general decline:
According to these statistics, 19 movies grossed over $1 million locally, while a total of 90 made over $100,000 at South African box offices.
This is down from 27 over $1 million and 120 over $100,000 in 2018.
I’m pretty chuffed to see that South Africa’s highest-grossing film for 2019 is The Lion King, which brought in $8,24 million (around R122 million), with second place going to Avengers: Endgame, which made $7,17 million (around R106 million).
Not surprising when you consider that Avengers: Endgame is now the highest-grossing movie of all time.
There is just one South African-made movie in our top 20 list, with Kandasamys: The Wedding coming in at 16th, grossing a total of $1,35 million (around R2 million).
Let’s see that trailer before we see the top 20 in all its glory:
There you have it.
