It was a pretty decent weekend for South Africans on the global stage.
In case you missed it, Miss South Africa, Zozibini Tunzi, claimed the Miss Universe title in Atlanta, Georgia – that’s a pretty big deal.
I can’t say I paid the Miss Universe pageant much attention, but I was pretty stoked with the fact that the Blitzboks claimed the Dubai Sevens title, beating New Zealand in the final.
The win is a superb way to start the World Sevens Series, which moves to Cape Town this weekend, although we do find ourselves in the so-called ‘Pool of Death’ for the tournament on home soil.
Only two teams from Pool A will qualify, which features last season’s World Rugby Sevens Series champions Fiji, series runners-up USA, and Japan alongside the Blitzboks.
For those who missed out on seeing our boys in action en route to the win, here’s a great recap of how we claimed the title:
You can watch the final in its entirety below:
Beating any rugby side from New Zealand always feels good. Any other South African rugby fans tired of all the winning? Me neither.
Via SuperSport, here’s more reaction from the aftermath:
“The final against New Zealand was incredible and the players deserve a lot of credit. It was very tight. In the first half there were a couple of end-to-ends and they scrambled so well,” Blitzbok coach Neil Powell said after the match.
“We had turnovers and attacked, but their scramble defence was excellent and we just could not score. We stayed in control of the match though and that was the difference. From the kick-off we had control.”
…The match was only the second time in New Zealand’s history that they had been held scoreless in a final of a tournament, but it was a victory that was much more emphatic than the scoreline suggested.
Rosko Specman was awarded the player of the tournament title.
Let’s hope the Blitzboks can deliver a similar performance in Cape Town, because you can guarantee the well-hydrated crowd will be backing them to the hilt.
