Well, it was only a matter of time.
Jeremy Clarkson is best known for bringing Top Gear to an end after a punch-up that was later dubbed Steakgate.
He also hosts The Grand Tour, alongside Richard Hammond and James May, and is clearly looking to drum up some headlines to boost the appeal of their new special, dubbed Seamen.
Like most old, rich men, he can’t stand the fact that a young woman would take a stand for what she believes in, and Greta Thunberg is clearly getting under his skin.
There’s one thing that Clarkson and Piers Morgan have in common. OK, two – they’re both knobs.
On a recent appearance on Ozzie show Sunrise, reports Stuff, Clarkson went off on the 16-year-old:
“She’s mad and dangerous and she’s causing young children sleepless nights with her idiocy.”
He suggested the Nobel Peace Prize nominee needed to “go to school, learn science, and do something about [climate change]”.
“I think she needs to go back to school and shut up.”
Why do these old blokes feel so threatened by a 16-year-old girl? In previous interviews, Clarkson has referred to Thunberg as a “spoilt brat” and a “stupid idiot”, so this isn’t even the first time he’s run his mouth.
Greta, no stranger to criticism, is taking it all in her stride:
Hope is good, but I’m going to have to disagree with you on that front. Sadly, we’re losing the battle.
Part of Clarkson’s anger seems to stem from the fact that his own daughter sees things differently:
He said his 25-year-old daughter Emily, a vocal supporter of Thunberg, thought she was “this deity put on Earth” and that he would never agree with her.
“I think she’s a weird Swede with a bad temper. Nothing will be achieved by sailing across the ocean in a diesel-powered yacht, and then lying about the diesel engine,” he previously said.
Clarkson probably advises that she tear around in vessels powered by gas-guzzling engines that make loud noises, like him and his pals.
Keep banging that drum, Greta, if only to piss off people like this.
