“There was a lot more to the story. Fritz was not in a good mental place and he wanted to die, I’m sure of it,” she said.
An East London trainee sangoma, Fritz “Majeke” Joubert, was shot dead by police after he brutally murdered traditional healer Anele Hoyana on the Geluksdal farm in Gonubie this past Saturday.
Joubert was caught on camera talking about ‘doing God’s work’ before he went to Hoyana’s dwelling on the farm. He allegedly forced Kwelerha farmer Sabelo Ngaka to film his erratic behaviour in the hours before he bludgeoned Hoyana to death.
Ngaka says he was one of three farmers who showed up at Hoyana’s house, reported TimesLIVE in a story yesterday.
More recently, also from TimesLIVE, further details have emerged about Joubert and his troubled past.
Joubert, who would have celebrated his 45th birthday on Thursday, was born in Lusaka, Zambia, but in later life joined the SA Police, where he was stationed in Boksburg and Bloemfontein.
A national police source, who is not authorised to speak to the media, told the Dispatch that Joubert was “discharged” from the police on August 31 1995.
The reasons for dismissal were not provided by the police, but the source said Joubert was sacked in connection to “too many” deaths.
Bloemfontein police had also opened a case of robbery with aggravating circumstances and crimen injuria against Joubert earlier this year. That was after he pointed a gun at two officers outside a KFC, took their car keys, and drove off.
The trial was set to take place at the Bloemfontein magistrate’s court on January 21, 2020.
On the night that Joubert murdered Anele Hoyana, a source states that he actually planned on killing “many people”.
He said Joubert had put a rifle on a stand in his upstairs bedroom pointing out the window towards the gate.
“He was going to shoot everyone who drove into the yard that morning. He said no one was leaving the farm alive. He was shot dead in that room,” the source said.
Another source said she believed Joubert wanted to die.
He was clearly a very disturbed individual.
It’s just a tragedy that he had to take an innocent family man down with him on his way out.
