Content warning – the following story contains graphic details of a brutal murder and disturbing video footage.
An East London farm owner and trainee sangoma, Fritz “Majeke” Joubert, was shot dead by police after he brutally murdered traditional healer Anele Hoyana on the Geluksdal farm in Gonubie on Saturday.
The 45-year-old farm owner allegedly allowed Hoyana and his family to stay on the farm temporarily, reports The Citizen.
[Police Captain Hazel] Mqala said the men had been socialising in the early hours of Saturday morning when an argument ensued and escalated to a physical fight on the deck outside the farmhouse.
“The farm owner assaulted this 40-year-old male friend with his fists and a rifle butt, resulting in the victim sustaining severe head injuries,” she said.
The farm owner apparently made numerous phone calls asking for help from neighbouring farmers, who in turn notified the nearest police stations.
When police arrived they found Hoyana’s body. He had sustained severe head injuries.
A warrant officer from Bluewater police station entered the house and the farm owner allegedly told him that “nobody is going to leave the farm premises today”, said Mqala.
“At that stage, the farm owner had taken the friends’ children hostage and locked them in the bathroom. He then requested the mother to return to the house, as she was hiding outside fearing for her life.”
In the first video Joubert uploaded to social media, he is going off on an unhinged rant, talking about the hostage situation being ‘as God intended’:
Once police had entered the premises, Joubert instructed them to place their firearms on the table, which they did not do. One of the officers distracted Joubert while another went into the house to rescue the children, who were then returned to their mother.
Joubert then attacked the Bluewater police officer from behind with his fists and attempted to disarm him.
A shot went off during the struggle and hit the floor. The police officer warned the man to stop, but he attacked him again and he fired a shot in self-defence.
“… during [the] struggle the bullet from his service pistol entered underneath the left arm and fatally wounded the attacker,” she said.
The police officer received medical attention after suffering a fractured nose, jaw and injuries to his face.
Footage has since emerged of Joubert at Hoyana’s house. You can see Hoyana, with his child in his arms, complying with Joubert’s instructions. Joubert is clearly unhinged:

Joubert filmed the actual act of murder itself and posted it on social media, but we will not be including it in this story.
It looks like someone filmed Joubert in the second video we have included above. It is not yet known who they may be.
Since the incident, The Citizen reports that more people have come forward with disturbing stories about Joubert.
Social media user Deejay Zwesta claimed to have met Hoyana once a few days before his death at the farm. Hoyana had apparently been trying to help Joubert fix his image in the community as he had been banned from many establishments due to his behaviour.
Deejay Zwesta said: “I was his own guest he invited earlier and turned to a beast that made me escape in the middle of the night at 2am, in the same house the deceased was there too, and her [his] very kind wife, I escaped with my girlfriend at 2am, he didn’t see me leaving as they had fell asleep [sic all].
Another social media user, Brad Pullin, alleged that Joubert had once threatened him with a gun, while Bronwen Keane Du Preez says that he threatened her children.
“He was not a good man and I can only hope and pray his children have the opportunity to be better. He is the only guy who ever threatened my young children to their faces, saying he was coming to murder them unless they get me to drop the court case.”
She further alleged his victims always dropped cases against him after accepting his bribe.
It looks like a lot of people were afraid of Joubert, but his behaviour was largely left unchecked.
East London Station Commander Brigadier Mxolisi Mqotyana commended the police officers for saving innocent lives.
