This week, we’ve seen the full spectrum of South Africa’s marketing landscape.
Nando’s, as per usual, served up something spicy with their #Mzansipoli advert, whereas Volkswagen’s radio ad for their Amarok V6 went down in flames.
An honourable mention to Ryobi and their profile of Kirsten Landman, too, which is both a well-executed and inspiring campaign.
With the Nando’s story, we laid down the challenge to Chicken Licken to respond with a winner of their own, but then we realised that they had actually delivered a zinger earlier in the month.
If you haven’t yet seen that one, meet Thato the Time Traveller, who has been on quite an adventure:
I like it, so that’s a hat tip to those responsible.
More info via Bizcommunity:
The film stars Sherldon Marema as guy-next-door Thato, who becomes an unsuspecting interdimensional hero, armed only with his chilled out attitude and Rock My Soul® meal.
Of course, Chicken Licken® is central to the ad in more ways than one, with the store at the end revealing a conceptual twist (spoiler alert) relating to your till slip.
“Chicken Licken® ads are known and loved for being quirky,” explained Xolisa Dyeshana, Joe Public, CCO. “That’s why the order number idea felt so right. If there’s any place that could just magically transport you backwards and forwards in time, it would be a Chicken Licken® store.”
I mean sure, whatever.
We like the ad, but let’s not get carried away.
Keep the quality ads coming.
