The ‘tiny living’ trend has taken the world by storm. It even has its own YouTube series.
A lot of South Africans got on board by converting shipping containers into living spaces, many of which use solar power to stay environmentally friendly.
The latest in ‘tiny living’ is to convert a van into a home, and that’s where American company Freedom Vans come in.
They recently converted a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter into a home with everything necessary for the owner to make a cross-country trip.
Business Insider took a look inside the van, named ‘Fitz Roy’ after a mountain in Patagonia.
Fitz Roy was designed and created for a woman who planned on committing to the #VanLife while traveling across North America.
The space was optimised for her nomadic and active lifestyle. For example, the garage and roof rack allows for extra gear storage, an important inclusion for the avid kayaker, biker, and hiker. And for longer off-the-grid trips, the van comes equipped with a 300-Ah lithium battery bank.
Fitz Roy — “Fitz” for short — was the company’s first van conversion to include a full interior bathroom and shower.
The breakfast area can be converted into a couch or daybed once you’re done eating:
The whole thing is said to have cost $95 000 (roughly R1,4 million).
With some know-how, you could certainly do it yourself for cheaper, or buy an already-kitted out camper van, but safe and happy travels to whoever drives this beaut around North America.
