Nobody likes losing, least of all those who find themselves at the very top of their professions.
Rafa Nadal is currently the number one-ranked player in the world, and any time he loses a match, some hard questions will follow.
On Monday, he went down to world number seven Alexander Zverev in the ATP World Tour Finals, which is news enough in itself.
Then, in the post-match press conference, he was pressed about why he lost to the German, with Italian reporter Ubaldo Scanagatta questioning whether it had anything to do with Nadal’s recent marriage to long-time partner Xisca Perello.
The two tied the knot in Mallorca back in mid-October, and Nadal said he only took one day off afterwards to celebrate.
Here’s the testy exchange, with Rafa holding it together pretty well:
I think we can excuse him the “bullshit” at the end.
This was Nadal’s first match back since he was forced to withdraw from the Paris Masters earlier this month with an abdominal tear. He’s recovered from far more serious injuries, so expect him to return to winning ways sooner rather than later.
