Sadly for Chelsea fans, the greatest 4-4 comeback of all time is already locked in.
All I will say is Cheick Tioté – don’t even try and argue.
That being said, last night’s Champions League showdown with Dutch giants Ajax does deserve to be singled out, with Frank Lampard’s side staging a superb fightback against a side that aided them along the way.
Also, as we have grown accustomed to this season, VAR was front and centre. A summary of the drama via the Telegraph, before we go to the highlights:
Believe nothing until the all-seeing eye of the video assistant referee has decreed it so, and as if to prove the case at this remarkable event, in front of a disbelieving stadium across eight goals, VAR served up two red cards, two penalties and one disallowed winner.
Chelsea vs Ajax, the director’s cut. A Champions League game when nothing could be taken for certain until VAR had rewound and reviewed and it was hard to keep up at times for those in the stadium without the benefit of television replays.
There were two Ajax players sent off in the same passage of play and then there was a dramatic late Cesar Azpilicueta winner ruled out long after the Chelsea captain had kissed his armband and launched himself chest-first on the turf.
Granit Xhaka could learn a thing or two from Cesar, who led from the front as his team stormed back into the match:

Even though Lampard has had his hand forced by Chelsea’s transfer ban, he still deserves credit for getting so much out of a team stacked with young, but raw, talent.
Liverpool’s win over Genk last night was far less dramatic and entertaining, but Jürgen Klopp’s red machine marches on:
You don’t always have to win pretty, as long as you’re winning.
Manchester City will give them a good run for their money in terms of the Premier League trophy, but it is beginning to look more and more like the season that Liverpool finally break their league drought.
